Sweden will deploy Gripen fighter jets to support the defence of NATO’s eastern flank in Poland from October 2026. The deployment will form part of a NATO operation aimed at strengthening the alliance’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence and protecting military and civilian support activities for Ukraine.
According to the press release, As part of the mission, Swedish Gripen fighter jets will contribute to NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence and provide protection for the logistics hub in south-eastern Poland that is used to provide military and civil support to Ukraine.
The Swedish fighter jets will mainly be based in Sweden and carry out operations in Polish airspace, with a smaller forward operating base in Poland.
As a NATO Ally, Sweden has provided fighter jets to several NATO operations. This will be the second time Sweden takes part in an operation with its fighter jets to protect the logistics hub in Poland. In 2025, Sweden was also engaged in NATO’s enhanced airspace surveillance in Poland.
